Overview
A recent article in The New England Journal of Medicine highlighted how delayed defibrillation is common and is associated with lower rates of survival after in-hospital cardiac arrest. Over time, the general care hospital floor has become a high-stress, high acuity environment, where patients who are sicker than ever before, are being cared for by fewer clinicians. Patient safety, in terms of preventable patient death, has become a major focus of healthcare providers and policy makers.

• Delayed cardiac defibrillation in hospitals- NEJM: Volume 358:9-17, January 3, 2008
• Fewer clinicians caring for sicker patients
• Preventable death a major focus

Standards bodies such as the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JACHO), and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), have taken notice of the need to address early identification of a patient’s compromised health status and are recommending actions that should be taken by hospitals. The IHI suggests the creation of Rapid Response Teams, and strongly advocates the early escalation of patient problems to appropriately trained clinicians.

How Technology can help
Technology can support these recommendations through centralized surveillance and remote alarm notification. These can be key communication vehicles for the early identification of adverse events. These early response hospital initiatives can now be complemented by our award-winning solution for centralized patient surveillance…Bernoulli Enterprise. Since hospitals are multi-vendor environments, institutions choose the Bernoulli Solution because it is an open platform designed to work with different vendors’ devices, for the benefit of the patient and the clinicians who care for them. Patients may be connected to various types of medical devices for physiological monitoring, ventilation, and IV therapy. Having a simple to use, real-time centralized surveillance system with secondary alarming, considerably helps clinicians provide better patient care.
